Project Paws Alive has kicked-off its fundraising effort to provide vital protective equipment for the Pawtucket Police Department K9 Unit in Rhode Island. The equipment goal for the unit consists of K9 first aid field trauma kits, Narcan kits, military grade K9 cooling vests, Kevlar boots, oxygen mask kits, and vehicle K9 monitoring and alert systems.

The Pawtucket Police Department K9 Unit consists of 4 K9s along with their human partners. Collectively they make up the first K9 unit the department has had in almost ten years. All the K9s have been trained for multipurpose use.

The two Patrol Teams consist of Officer James Leach and Magno, a 15-month old Belgian Malinois, and Officer Gregory Malo and Argo, a 14 month old Czech Shepard. Magno and Argo’s focus will be on patrolling, narcotics detection, building and area searches, crowd control, and suspect apprehension.

The Tracking Team consists of Officer William Figura and Neko, a 7-month old Bloodhound. Neko and Officer Figura are a specialized team, focusing on search and rescue operations which includes searching out missing persons, finding evidence, and locating suspects. Neko is the only certified Police Bloodhound in Southern New England. Detective Trevor Lefebvre, is partnered with a new type of Police Dog, Watson a 10-month old Golden Doodle. Watson is a compassion dog. His job is to provide comfort to crime victims who have experienced extremely traumatic events. He is the first full time Police Compassion animal in Rhode Island.

Now these four-legged officers need the same level of protective equipment their human partners have to keep them safe while on duty.

The Tactical K9 First Aid Field Trauma Kit with Combat Gauze is a military-grade kit designed for use by Law Enforcement, Military, Fire, and Search & Rescue K9 Units. This kit contains specific supplies needed to treat the K9 for injuries ranging from gunshot and knife wounds to snake bites. The kit provides the necessary tools to address the major traumatic injuries common to K9’s operating in the law enforcement environment as well as common K9 emergencies such as heat injury and toxic ingestion.

Constructed of rugged 500D Cordura with self-repairing zippers and silent 550 cord pulls, the kit is also water-resistant. The MOLLE style webbing and Infrared Signature Reduction make this kit the superior solution whether on daily patrol, tactical missions, explosives details, covert operations, or extended search and tracking purposes.

K9 teams face substantial risks on a daily basis. These dogs have been punched, stabbed, poisoned and shot by fleeing suspects. Those who work in Search & Rescue, Apprehension and Explosive Detection teams have an increased risk of injury due to extreme conditions, poisoning, or explosion. Tracking teams that spend hours in the woods and remote areas do not have access to immediately available emergency care.

While emergency care is often readily available to the handler, the same cannot be said of their canine partner. Equipping them with a K9 tactical first aid trauma kit for use in the field can make a huge difference. Distribution of these kits will give the handlers the means to do just that. In addition, everything in the kit can also be used to treat and/or the save the life of a human.

K9 NARCAN kits will stop an accidental overdose should a K9 come in contact with an opioid on duty. K9s are just the latest victims in a growing opioid epidemic that has spread across the United States. K9 units searching for illicit drugs are often exposed to lethal amounts of opioids, including Fentanyl. The frightening strength of some of these drugs, particularly Fentanyl, present a new danger to K9s.

NARCAN is a drug designed to immediately reverse the effects of opioids like Heroin, Fentanyl and Carfentanil by blocking the body’s opiate receptors. NARCAN reverses overdoses with few side effects. It has long been used by doctors and ambulance crews. A NARCAN dose can successfully stabilize a K9 at the scene, who can then be transported to an animal hospital for further treatment and observation.

Fentanyl is so lethal that a tiny amount the size of a grain of rice can kill a K9 or human.

Our complete K9 NARCAN kit includes two separate nasal spray doses and a NARCAN carry pouch which can be worn on the K9 Handlers duty belt or vest to ensure constant and immediate access when needed. Two doses are included because field reports have shown that often times more than one dose is required to be administered on-scene to K9s.

The specialized carry pouches are made of rugged nylon that sheds moisture. The interior is poly insulation which provides protection from extreme temperature to protect the NARCAN from the weather and elements to ensure the NARCAN is at full strength.

The ACE K9 vehicle systems are designed to monitor, detect, and protect the K9s at all times even when the handler is away from the vehicle. Our maximum level system package is comprised of a Hot n’Pop Pro System, Ace Watchdog Smart Phone technology package, No K9 Left behind alert system, and engine stall, carbon, smoke, and fire detection.

The units monitor and alert on vital components including temperature, vehicle battery voltage, engine stall, and include a door-popper system. This system not only makes automatic corrective actions to the heat such as opening windows and turning on fans, it audibly and visually alerts everyone nearby. As a last measure, the system will open the vehicle door allowing the K9 to exit. From beginning to end the officer is alerted via horns, sirens, lights and digital transmitters worn on their person. The unit also includes a cold temp alert should the vehicle temp drop below a set degree for year-round K9 protection.

Systems also include the “No K9 Left Behind” feature which is exclusive to Ace K9 systems and provides an end of shift system monitor which will alert and continue to alert until the door to the K9 has been fully opened to release the K9 and the officer has acknowledged the release of the K9. Thus providing yet another layer of safety to protect against distractions and other instances where a K9 may be accidentally left in a vehicle at the end of shift.

The AceWatchDog application is a another feature of the system that allows 24/7 live system monitoring on smartphones and enables multiple resources such as other handlers and supervisors to monitor the system and receive notifications via their phone to ensure the utmost peace of mind that the K9 is safe. The system has unlimited monitoring range through the internet to anywhere in the world. This application allows K9 Units to receive warning notifications before the danger and alarms happen so they can take action to ensure the K9 is safe.
